Programs for U.S. Citizens

U.S. students, scholars, professionals, and teachers can obtain a financial support for their study, research, and teaching stays in the Slovak Republic.

General requirements

- High level of academic achievements

The Fulbright program expects from its grantees not only high academic performance, but also an active contribution to the promotion of mutual understanding of their countries.

The Fulbright Commission co-operates closely with the the U.S. Department of State, and engages on the U.S. side non-profit organizations: the Institute of International Education and Council for International Exchange of Scholars. The U.S. candidates have to contact these institutions to obtain more information and application material.

However, the Fulbright Commission can assist candidates with finding and contacting possible partner schools, research institutes and other academic and research institutions in the Slovak Republic.

Fulbright Awards for U.S. Faculty and Professionals (Lecturing and/or Research)

U.S. scholars with considerable academic experience who propose projects in cooperation with a Slovak host institution (usually a university or post/secondary university level institution). Academic year is from October to June. Grantees can lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields, although preference will be given to subjects related to the United States and to recent social, economic, and political changes in the Slovak Republic.

  • Application and Procedure Deadline

For all U.S. scholars, the application deadline is August 1 for awards beginning in September of the following year. Information and application can be obtained from the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), Washington, http://www.cies.org /us_scholars/. Individual award descriptions can be found in the award book published by CIES for the respective academic year.

Fulbright for Graduate Study and Research Abroad

U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to conduct study and research in the Slovak Republic. Advanced graduate students capable of working independently are preferred. Applicants should have some experience in the proposed field of study. A substantial knowledge of Slovak is required to commensurate with the level needed for the proposed independent research or study in fields such as political science, Slovak history, literature, and anthropology by the beginning date of the grant. Academic year is through October to June. Applications in all fields will be considered; applications in arts are encouraged.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship

Graduating seniors with degrees in English, History, American literature, TEFL/Applied Lingustics and/or experience in teaching and/or coursework in American studies are desirable candidates. Other fields will be seriously considered if combined with teaching experience or an education program. Grantees will be placed as teaching assistants corresponding to their project priorities throughout the country. Positions will require teaching at least 15 hours per week.

Fulbright Specialists Program

Fulbright Specialists Program activities are designed to provide U.S. faculty and professionals with opportunities to collaborate with professional counterparts on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities. The program awards grants ranging from two to six weeks, and they have rolling deadline. The program is open to qualified U.S. scholars and professionals in specified fields.
